In September 2025, I was looking for a simple way to generate a QR code for personal use.

What I found instead were websites that required email registration, account creation, or even payment — just to generate or download a basic QR code. Some sites appeared free at first, but blocked downloads unless you paid.

That experience felt unnecessary and frustrating.

So I decided to build qr-gen.org.

How it works

qr-gen.org generates and decodes QR codes entirely in your browser.

The website uses modern, open-source JavaScript libraries to create and read QR codes locally on your device. No data is sent to a server during this process.

When decoding a QR code, the selected image is processed locally in your browser. The file is never uploaded, stored, or shared.

All QR codes generated on this website are static, meaning the encoded content is embedded directly into the QR image itself.
